New Vicar

  • Name: The Revd. Michael John Gentry
  • Start Date:  Tuesday, 10th February 2026
  • Current Position: Associate Rector in the benefice of Chelsfield with Green Street Green and Pratts Bottom in Orpington Deanery

The Bishop of Rochester is pleased to announce that The Revd. Michael John Gentry is to be appointed Vicar of St Mark's Church, Bromley.
Michael is currently Associate Rector in the benefice of Chelsfield with Green Street Green and Pratts Bottom in Orpington Deanery, a post he has held for the past four years.
We are fortunate that Michael comes to us with a wealth of parish experience.  Prior to his current post he ministered in Tonbridge Archdeaconry for 20 years, including a period as Area Dean for Sevenoaks, but he knows Bromley very well, having served his curacy at Bromley Parish Church.  Returning to the Deanery therefore feels very much like he is 'coming home'.
Michael is married to Sue, who is a teacher.  Between them they have four children, two of whom are still living at home.
Michael studied for ordination at St Stephen's House Oxford, and before ordination worked for the Ordnance Survey as a cartographic surveyor.  He is passionate about growing God's Kingdom and supporting and empowering others to share in that ministry, and he has a particular interest in Liturgy, Social Justice and Green issues.  He is excited about the missional opportunities at St Mark's, building on existing community relationships and developing new ones.
Away from his priestly ministry, Michael plays croquet competitively and is a qualified croquet referee.
Michael says, "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity and privilege to serve as your Vicar, and look forward to being part of the parish, Deanery and wider community. With God's guidance, together we will endeavour to undertake the mission to which we are all called in this part of the Diocese. I am excited to be part of this parish as it looks to the months and years ahead.  As a family, we are excited to move and cannot wait to meet you and begin to get you know you all.”
Please pray for Michael, Sue and the family as they ready themselves to move to The Vicarage after the New Year, and for Michael as he prepares for his licensing on Tuesday, 10th February.
